5 Things to Do Before Your Removalists Arrive (That Most People Forget)

You've booked your removalists, you've started packing — but there are a handful of things that often get forgotten until moving day, when it's too late. Here are five things to sort out before your crew arrives.

1. Confirm Parking for the Truck

This is the one that causes the most delays on moving day. A large removalist truck needs a clear space as close to the front door as possible. If you're in an apartment or a busy street, you may need to reserve parking the night before, get a permit from your local council, or notify neighbours to move their cars. Let us know about any parking challenges when you book.

2. Disassemble What You Can

Beds, flat-pack furniture, and large wardrobes are much easier to move when broken down. If you can disassemble these before the crew arrives, it saves significant time — and money on your hourly rate. Keep all screws and fittings in a labelled zip-lock bag taped to the furniture.

3. Set Aside an 'Open First' Box

Pack a box of essentials you'll need immediately on arrival — kettle, mugs, phone charger, toilet paper, hand soap, a change of clothes, and any medications. Mark it clearly and make sure it goes on the truck last so it comes off first.

4. Do a Fridge and Freezer Run-Down

Defrost your freezer at least 24 hours before moving day. Use up or give away perishable fridge items in the days before. Moving a full freezer is messy and can damage the unit. Empty it, clean it, and leave the doors ajar.

5. Arrange Pets and Young Children

Moving day is chaotic — open doors, heavy furniture moving through corridors, and stressed adults everywhere. It's not safe or comfortable for pets or small children. Arrange for them to be elsewhere for the day if at all possible.
